Another week and another mildly interesting pile of 75 to sift through! It’s time for Tok’s half assed decks of the week! Real world job required attention today so Hidsnake picked the decks for this week.
I think Hidsnake is right that the deck is mislabeled as a control deck on SCG, midrange sounds right. The deck runs [c]From Beyond[/c] which is cool, I’ve kept my eye on that card to do something since it was spoiled. The [c]Tireless Tracker[/c] count looks a bit low to me with all of the ways to sneak extra lands into play. The deck looks like it was built with [c]The Gitrog Monster[/c] in mind with [c]Ulvenwald Hydra[/c], [c]Nissa, Vastwood Seer[/c], [c]Nissa’s Pilgrimage[/c], and [c]Nissa’s Renewal[/c]. The two creatures who fetch lands, Nissa, Vastwood Seer and Ulvenwald Hydra, as well as [c]Sylvan Advocate[/c] benefit from getting lots of lands in play quickly and have a good synergy with each other.
Legacy Eldrazi has access to 3 [c]Sol Ring[/c] lands ([c]Ancient Tomb[/c], [c]City of Traitors[/c], and [c]Eldrazi Temple[/c]) as well as [c]Eye of Ugin[/c] which makes for consistent stupid amounts of mana. The deck leverages 2 land [c]Thought-knot Seer[/c]s, Turn one [c]Eldrazi Mimic[/c]s (Yes plural, it costs 0 with an Eye of Ugin) followed by [c] Endless One[/c], [c]Chalice of the Void[/c] at every relevant charge counter count, and a 1 land [c]Umezawa’s Jitte[/c] thrown in for fun. Hidsnake noted this place is high for Legacy Eldrazi.
[c]Imperial Recruiter[/c] could use a reprint. Now that that’s out of the way, Death and Taxes with a splash of red for Imperial Recruiter and [c]Magus of the Moon[/c] sounds fun. Imperial Recruiter can tutor up [c]Ethersworn Canonist[/c] to counter decks that rely on casting more than one spell a turn, [c]Mirran Crusader[/c] if playing against decks running BG, Magus of the Moon to mess with shaky mana bases, or grab [c]Stoneforge Mystic[/c] to tutor up a [c]Batterskull[/c]. The deck has [c]Aether Vial[/c] for instant speed Recruiter as well as [c]Flickerwisp[/c].
So, I saw this deck while skimming decks for today and thought the name was cool. Turns out [c]Doomsday[/c] is one of the combo pieces. Go figure. From what I can tell the combo is to cast Doomsday and stack your deck so [c]Laboratory Maniac[/c] is on the battlefield, then draw cards until you win. The deck plays [c]Burning Wish[/c] to pick combo pieces from the sideboard. [c]Dark Ritual[/c], [c]Lion’s Eye Diamond[/c], [c]Lotus Petal[/c], and [c]Rain of Filth[/c] to generate mana to combo off. [c]Brainstorm[/c], [c]Gitaxian Probe[/c], [c]Ideas Unbound[/c], and [c]Ponder[/c] as card draw. There looks to be multiple ways to go off, but I’m not sure which is best. [c]Sensei’s Divining Top[/c] is important to the combo though.
