This week I’ll drop some final thoughts on Eternal Masters and give a quick summary of Standard and Modern trends on cardboard prices. And all-time highs/lows day!
Eternal Masters
I want to start with talking about some of the EV’s on Eternal Masters boxes. Most speculators have put the current value of a box at ~$210-$240. At MSRP of $250, that isn’t terrible. That is, if you can get a box at MSRP. Most boxes I’ve seen have been going for around $280 on Ebay and TCGPlayer.
One thing that has been said about this set is that the box has a great deal of potential in the long game. That after 2-3 years these boxes could be going for $350-$400. This is because many cards printed in this set have a chance of being foil for the first time ever. Cards like [mtg_card]Shardless Agent[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Baleful Strix[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Malicious Affliction[/mtg_card] that were in prebuilt decks from Planechase and Commander but never printed in an actual set. So, to sum it up, if you have a chance to get a box at just over MSRP, feel free to go buy the box and even rip it open if you want to draft with friends. Or sit on it for profit. Your choice. If you can find a cheap box.
Standard and GP Costa Rica
Looking over the Top 8 at GP Costa Rica, I’m not too impressed. Six of the top 8 decks are Bant Company or WG Tokens. Lotta [mtg_card]Gideon, Ally of Zendikar[/mtg_card], lotta [mtg_card]Dromoka’s Command[/mtg_card], lotta tokens creatures everywhere. /yawn
As an addendum to standard talks, people are starting to bailout hard on Magic Origins and Dragons of Tarkir cards. [mtg_card]Deathmist Raptor[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Den Protector[/mtg_card] have been dropping like a rock. [mtg_card]Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy[/mtg_card] is below $50. If you aren’t out of these cards now, you may have already missed the boat.
Modern
I want to bring up something quickly on Modern. This Dredge deck that started popping up with [mtg_card]Prized Amalgam[/mtg_card] has really started hitting prices on other Modern cards. The two notable targets being [mtg_card]Greater Gargadon[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Bridge from Below[/mtg_card]. Neither were reprinted in Eternal Masters and there isn’t an expectation of a reprint for either anytime soon. Bridge from Below in particular has been the target of quite a bit of speculation of late. A week ago the card had set at $6, now it is spiking up to $10. Anyway, both cards have been experimented with in the new Dredge deck.
Related sidenote: There is some talk that the deck and the [mtg_card]Death’s Shadow[/mtg_card] deck could be the next targets of a banning. This is purely due to the speed of the deck. Death's Shadow can kill on T2 somewhat inconsistently and Dredge can kill rather consistently on T3. It might be a bit early to start talking about bannings on these lists, but the sheer speed of these decks puts a giant target on its back. If you put my hand to the fire to pick possible targets, I'd look at [mtg_card]Mutagenic Growth[/mtg_card] and Death's Shadow. Much harder to find a target for Dredge that doesn't significantly impact other viable decks tot he format.
Other Notes
[mtg_card]Shepherd of Rot[/mtg_card] has two sellers on TCGPlayer for the Placechase version. Which has inflated the cost of this common card. The card was printed in Onslaught if you actually want a copy. But I don’t really know why you would.
[mtg_card]Library of Alexandria[/mtg_card] is a very popular reserve list card with VERY low printing. Pricing is always going to erratic on that card.
[mtg_card]Grand Architect[/mtg_card] is a very popular speculation target. It’s been played in a few Affinity decks. Some think that Kaladesh will bring in cards that might be broken with Grand Architect. It’s a pretty cheap card at $2.50 but is also on the rise. I think it’s a fine card to invest into. It also has an infinite mana loop with [mtg_card]Pili-Pala[/mtg_card]. It’s a low rate, cheap Modern combo for people who want a cheap deck to get into Modern with.
[mtg_card]Celestial Colonnade[/mtg_card] is up to over $40. Which is completely insane to me. The ceiling of this card does not seem to exist. The only thing that could stop it is if everyone stops playing Jeskai in Modern (Good luck with that) or it gets reprinted (Good luck with that).
[mtg_card]Gavony Township[/mtg_card] is another popular speculation target. It’s very popular in [mtg_card]Chord of Calling[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]Collected Company[/mtg_card] decks as a win condition for them to go the beatdown route instead of the combo route. Makes it very good against decks that think to win by lock out with [mtg_card]Grafdigger’s Cage[/mtg_card]. It’s probably the most played of the utility land cycle of Innistad block.
[mtg_card]Thoughtseize[/mtg_card] has dropped down to $16. Might be a good time to buy in. I pretty sure I will. No way this card gets reprinted anytime soon since it was just in Theros.
