This week, we’re going to talk about the reserve list. We could have talked about Eldrich Moon spoils... but no, we need to have some of the most insane collections of buyouts in the history of Magic.
Reserve List Buyouts
Eleven cards at least doubled in price over the last week, eight of which were on the reserve list. I want to start here by prefacing some important points. First, I want to say just because a card is on the reserve list doesn’t mean it gets any play, nor does it mean the card is good. For every [mtg_card]Tolarian Academy[/mtg_card] on the list, there is an [mtg_card]Elephant Graveyard[/mtg_card]. Cards on the list that don’t get play anywhere would include [mtg_card]Polar Kraken[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Altar of Bone[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Island of Wak-Wak[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Singing Tree[/mtg_card]. Most players have zero interest in playing these cards in any format be it Commander, Legacy, or Vintage. These cards are in no decks. Anyone buying them is doing so purely for collection purposes. These cards should have sharp price drops in the coming months because they simply cannot be moved at nearly any price.
Secondly, just because someone sells a product at $20, doesn’t mean there is demand to buy it at that listed price. This logic is why [mtg_card]Bazaar of Baghdad[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale[/mtg_card] appear on my lists, as most dealers will not touch these cards because they are too hard to move at current prices. Dealers end up sitting on them for years. The high price makes it too restrictive to anyone that would have interest. So when a handful of copies are sold, it ripples throughout the market. A good example of these are [mtg_card]Gravity Sphere[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Helm of Obedience[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Mirror Universe[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Grim Monolith[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Old Man of the Sea[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Drop of Honey[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Gaea’s Cradle[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Nether Void[/mtg_card]. Some of these cards see play, but not enough to justify the current price. If you can sell them now, good. I would as well.
Lastly, some of these buyout really were inevitable. There are many reserve list cards that get enough play in Legacy and Commander that increased prices will likely hold against pretty much any buyout. [mtg_card]Lion’s Eye Diamond[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Moat[/mtg_card], which exploded last week, are good examples. This week those would likely be [mtg_card]Shallow Grave[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Humility[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Serra’s Sanctum[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Intuition[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]City of Traitors[/mtg_card]. They probably have peaked, but this is around the price you will see these cards at unless something drastic happens with reserve list cards. Demand for these cards should be able to meet this price. If you still plan on holding these cards, I don’t blame you. At the same time, I don’t blame you for selling if you need some quick cash.
Now, there were a few reserve lists card here I did not bring up in these lists because I think they still haven’t hit the peak of their spike. Even if you were to buy into them now, I suspect you can still make a quick buck. These would be [mtg_card]City of Solitude[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Dream Halls[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Undiscovered Paradise[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Lake of the Dead[/mtg_card]. Most of these are Commander fun toys or occasionally played Legacy cards still going for around $10. Solid buys if you want them for these decks or to make a small speculation buy.
Ok, Onto Regularly Scheduled Eldritch Moon Stuffs
[mtg_card]Rattlechains[/mtg_card] was a bulk rare at $0.50. It’s a $3.50 card now. Bunch of really nice spirits in the new set. This card was already seeing some play in a few tempo style decks in standard. I bought a set for around $2. I’m happy now. Card was good but just needed the supporting cast.
Speaking of needing a supporting cast, [mtg_card]Relentless Dead[/mtg_card]. It shot out of the gates at over $15 before tanking down to $6. Everyone and their brother knew this was a really powerful card, but it would need some supporting zombies. I don’t think it got a good supporting cast in Eldritch Moon, but it spiked anyway. If you plan on play it, keep your set and build your decks. If you have no plans on playing it, you could sell now. You would be hedging you bets that it would not see any play in Standard. It could hit $20 easy if it wins a major event.
[mtg_card]Conspiracy[/mtg_card]’s spike is in part because of the new Eldrazi tutor in Eldritch Moon, [mtg_card]Coax from the Blind Eternities[/mtg_card]. With it you can tutor any creature type from outside the game. Just a fun little casual combo. Don’t expect to see it anywhere else.
