Please don’t lie to yourself. You know the only reason you are opening this article is because you know I will talk about [mtg_card]Narwhal[/mtg_card]s and [mtg_card]Giant Spider[/mtg_card]s.
Return of the Attack of the Reserve List
[mtg_card]Narwhal[/mtg_card]s. For those of you who do not know, and I assume the person/people involved in the buyout did not as well, most cards in Homelands is worth dirt. The set was massively overprinted and the most popular card in it is [mtg_card]Merchant Scroll[/mtg_card]. And if you read Merchant Scroll you will wonder how this card is only $2. Well, that’s because Homelands cards are worth dirt. So, even if Narwhal and [mtg_card]Koskun Falls[/mtg_card] are on the reserve list, there are quite a few of them out in the wild if you really wanted to cause a buyout. Also, Narwhal is a really bad card. At least Koskun Falls is a fun casual card as a black prison effect. Which is…never fun I guess.
Few other cards on the reserve list made expect-able pops that are worth noting. [mtg_card]Dream Halls[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Candelabra of Tawnos[/mtg_card] both had big jumps. They are the kind of reserve list cards with staying power. They ought to hold around that price for a while due to demand in Legacy. On the other hand, [mtg_card]Transmute Artifact[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Academy Rector[/mtg_card] are more...questionable. Both don’t see much play outside of casual or Commander. Academy Rector in particular is a Commander all-star. It could hold its price even. I just don’t expect either to do so.
Now for more happy thoughts. [mtg_card]Altar of Bone[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Island of Wak-Wak[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Mirror Universe[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Gravity Sphere[/mtg_card] all had massive drops. Altar of Bone lost half of its value. I’ll be honest, this is a bit faster than I expected them to fall. But I still do expect all of them to fall even further. These are bad cards than even Commander doesn’t play.
Tiny aside. [mtg_card]Squandered Resources[/mtg_card] popped up all the way at the bottom of list. If you haven’t play Squandered Resources in a [mtg_card]The Gitrog Monster[/mtg_card] for Commander, you are missing out on a lot of fun.
Eldritch Moon Movement
I made a point in the Friday post that [mtg_card]Ishkanah, Grafwidow[/mtg_card] was starting to rise, and to grab a copy if you wanted some. The next day it was $10 card. I think this is a decent Standard card, but I’m not to hype on it for other constructed formats. It lacks the offensive punch IMO. It good for stabilizing the board, but not sure you can go right to winning the game with it. I mostly want it for myself in Commander and my Cube.
Other big mover was [mtg_card]Distended Mindbender[/mtg_card]. I was so high on this card I totally did not include it in the set analysis. I can see why it might be good. In the mid to late game, this card can take your opponent’s threat and answer and blow them out from there. I think it’s too slow and need to have more of an impact on the board at that price. Not hype on it.
The big cards to talk about is [mtg_card]Mausoleum Wanderer[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Spell Queller[/mtg_card]. I’m hearing that spirits will likely be a tier 1 deck in Standard. It also might even be a Modern playable deck. Modern has quite a few tools available to it. But I’ve heard this deck is similar to Monoblue Faeries in Modern. A deck that can land a few flyers early and play a bunch of counterspells to beat you out. We’ve already seen buys for [mtg_card]Rattlechains[/mtg_card], and it sounds like pros think Spell Queller is broken. I would look into other decent spirits in Standard and Modern such as [mtg_card]Selfless Spirit[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Bygone Bishop[/mtg_card], and [mtg_card]Geist of Saint Traft[/mtg_card] along with other related cards like [mtg_card]Cavern of Souls[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Mutavault[/mtg_card]. Selfless Spirit is a card I like quite a bit for play in Standard and maybe even Modern. Mutavault is just a solid investment.
Other Notes
I’m not too sure what happened with [mtg_card]Mishra’s Bauble[/mtg_card]. The card makes an appearance as a 4x in a Death’s Shadow deck that performs fairly well. It’s basically [mtg_card]Gitaxian Probe[/mtg_card] 5x-8x without the life loss. What’s important about it is that it buffs [mtg_card]Monastery Swiftspear[/mtg_card] and still grants a card draw. Don’t know how that caused such a rise.
[mtg_card]River of Tears[/mtg_card] jumped again. Expect all of the Future Sight lands to look like this until they get a reprint run. And it doesn’t matter if they are any good or not, because this one isn’t good at all.
