Aether Revolt Set Review

Myself and Tok have been working this set review for about the past two weeks to give our thoughts to some of the notable cards in the set and recommendations for investment. So, let's jump right in.

Note: All prices are TCGPlayer Market Price as of 1/11/17.

#4 - [mtg_card]Aethergeode Miner[/mtg_card] - 1W

Creature - Dwarf Scout - Rare

Whenever Aethergeode Miner attacks, you get EE.

Pay EE: Exile Aethergeode Miner, then return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control.

3/1

TCGPlayer MP: $0.56

Hidsnake: I think this is standard playable. Can faux attack, has built in evasion, can build energy counters, and has 3 power at 2CMC to boot. Even triggers Revolt.

Tok: It can protect itself well against targeted removal. I don’t know how useful faux attacks are, but the ability to save itself from an unfavorable block or a flashed blocker is good.

#15 - [mtg_card]Deadeye Harpooner[/mtg_card] - 2W

Creature - Dwarf Warrior - Uncommon

Revolt -- When Deadeye Harpooner enters the battlefield, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, destroy target tapped creature an opponent controls.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.17

Hidsnake: While revolt is easy to find viability in formats that have fetchlands, Standard it a bit trickier. I think this is fine removal for a limited format, but it’s a bit trickier to see how good this will be a Standard world.

Tok: Revolt seems like a modified version of morbid. I won’t say better or worse, just similar. I don’t think destroy tapped creatures has really made an appearance in standard and when it has it has been at instant speed. I think this card is probably a workhorse in limited that won’t see constructed play.

#18 - [mtg_card]Exquisite Archangel[/mtg_card] - 5WW

Creature - Angel - Mythic

Flying

If you would lose the game, instead exile Exquisite Archangel and your life total becomes equal to your starting life total.

5/5

TCGPlayer MP: $2.54

Hidsnake: I thought as a joke that [mtg_card]Chord of Calling[/mtg_card] decks might run this to dodge a kill shot, but at 7CMC that’s probably a stretch. I think at 7CMC this card is probably a stretch to do anything.

Tok: For 7 mana they could have given it flash. I suppose your opponent has to have the removal for it, or the board presence to not care. Seems like this will kill more people than it saves.

#19 - [mtg_card]Felidar Guardian[/mtg_card] - 3W

Creature - Cat Beast - Uncommon

When Felidar Guardian enters the battlefield, you may exile another target permanent you control, then return that card to the battlefield under its owner’s control.

1/4

TCGPlayer MP: $0.86

Hidsnake: Remember that janky [mtg_card]Saheeli Rai[/mtg_card] deck I had for Modern using [mtg_card]Sun Titan[/mtg_card]s? This cleans that up quite a bit. I hate to say it guys, but I think [mtg_card]Splinter Twin[/mtg_card] may be back. Oh, and it’s going to be Standard legal for a LOOOOOOONG time.

Tok: I am surprised they printed this with Saheeli in Standard. That’s a turn 4 win isn’t it? Gross.

Hidsnake: This combo is far more gross now that they blew up the current Standard with the new banlist.

#22 - [mtg_card]Solemn Recruit[/mtg_card] - 1WW

Creature - Dwarf Warrior - Rare

Double strike

Revolt -- At the beginning of you end step, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Solemn Recruit.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.99

Hidsnake: I alway hype for the 3CMC 2/2 double striker, and always just leave sad that they aren’t any good.

Tok: Just build a [mtg_card]Norin the Wary[/mtg_card] deck and throw this guy in. Trollololol. On a serious note, this follows an [mtg_card]Aethergeode Miner[/mtg_card] well I guess.

#23 - [mtg_card]Sram, Senior Edificer[/mtg_card] - 1W

Legendary Creature - Dwarf Advisor - Rare

Whenever you cast an Aura, Equipment, or Vehicle spell, draw a card.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $1.49

Hidsnake: Oh god. Puresteel Storm (A combo deck with [mtg_card]Puresteel Paladin[/mtg_card]) is going to be a thing again. Why would anyone do this to people? That deck is like the [mtg_card]High Tide[/mtg_card] of Modern. I suspect this will be a fairly popular card in this set since it lets you draw cards for casting Auras. Tends to do well in casual circles.

Tok: Also it can crew [mtg_card]Smuggler’s Copter[/mtg_card] so it may fit in the vehicles deck. I don’t think [mtg_card]Bone Saw[/mtg_card] will suddenly become viable, but it synergises well with this card. Outside of Puresteel Paladin is the obvious choice as you mentioned. I think it may be worth looking at Bogles as well, but the list may be too tight for that though.

Hidsnake: With the Copter ban, I think you can ax that vehicles plan. Bogles has [mtg_card]Kor Spiritdancer[/mtg_card] which I’d say showed up in 50% of the Bogles decks and is probably better.

Tok: True on both points.

Hidsnake: I think if you are after this for Commander or with intent to actually play in some deck, anything around $1 is probably fair. I suspect this card will be relatively popular in casual circles.

#24 - [mtg_card]Sram’s Expertise[/mtg_card] - 2WW

Sorcery - Rare

Create three 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature tokens.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

TCGPlayer MP: $2.35

Hidsnake: I debated if this is playable in Modern tokens, and settled with at 4CMC it probably isn’t. But being able to drop 3 tokens and an [mtg_card]Intangible Virtue[/mtg_card] in a single turn is pretty good off 4 mana. Now for Standard this is much more difficult to judge. Token decks haven’t been particularly spicy in Standard because of the lack of anthems and lords to support them. I don’t really feel like that changes here.

Tok: In Modern tokens you can cast [mtg_card]Lingering Souls[/mtg_card] as well. Pretty disgusting if you already have an anthem on the board. Definitely a card to test in that deck. In Standard you can play [mtg_card]Nissa, Voice of Zendikar[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]Liliana, the Last Hope[/mtg_card]. Nissa seems more synergistic with her -2, but both of them are threats that are now protected by 3 tokens.

Hidsnake: While this into Lingering Souls sounds good on paper, it doesn’t realistically make sense for a tokens deck to do that. You already have 3 tokens in play, it’s probably better to hold onto you Lingering Souls until a they deal with your 3 tokens so you don’t run 1.5 cards into a sweeper. But your point of comboing with planeswalkers in Standard is logical. There are plenty of high value 3CMC cards you can play with with even if the anthems just aren’t there.

Tok: There is a lord in [mtg_card]Chief of the Foundry[/mtg_card], but he doesn’t provide anything other than the buff and is easy to remove.

Hidsnake: That might be good enough to be a Standard playable combo, but I would have to go through all the 3 and 2 CMC cards to figure out if there are enough targets for it.

#25 - [mtg_card]Thopter Arrest[/mtg_card] - 2W

Enchantment - Uncommon

When Thopter Arrest enters the battlefield, exile target artifact or creature an opponent controls until Thopter Arrest leaves the battlefield.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.33

Hidsnake: An [mtg_card]Oblivion Ring[/mtg_card] that doesn’t hit planeswalkers or enchantments isn’t a very good Oblivion Ring. You can double down that fact in Standard, where planeswalkers are pretty popular to play.

#27 - [mtg_card]Aethertide Whale[/mtg_card] - 4UU

Creature - Whale - Rare

Flying

When Aethertide Whale enters the battlefield, you get EEEEEE.

Pay EEEE: Return Aethertide Whale to its owner’s hand.

6/4

TCGPlayer MP: $0.38

Hidsnake: I don’t think there is a single spell in the game the generates this many energy counters. Not to mention it’s a self sufficient engine, so long as you have mana.

Tok: In my head I sounded out EEEEEE as a shrill noise and realized this is my favorite whale ever. It sounds like a whale song with a long note when the whale enters the battlefield and a shorter note when it leaves, the ability even reminds me of a whale breaching and diving. It’s a pretty good card as well. Protects itself from removal and combat tricks, it has evasion, it generates a bunch of energy by itself, and can act as a finisher in blue. I have no idea if this card will see constructed play, but it’s a bomb in limited.

Hidsnake: (Editor’s note) I did not edit Tok’s comment at all. I haven’t even read it. Just putting it out there in all its glory.

#28 - [mtg_card]Baral, Chief of Compliance[/mtg_card] - 1U

Legendary Creature - Human Wizard - Rare

Instant and sorcery spells you cast cost 1 less to cast.

Whenever a spell or ability you control counters a spell, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card.

1/3

TCGPlayer MP: $5.28

Hidsnake: Commander-bait.

Tok: You know what MTG was lacking? A bureaucrat. Seriously though, seems like a fun card. Was I just baited?

Hidsnake: Probably. I think his high price come off the fact he is a cost reduction effect. Never broken. Still don’t expect much play in Standard. He’s still just Commander-bait.

#29 - [mtg_card]Baral's Expertise[/mtg_card] - 3UU

Sorcery - Rare

Return up to three target artifacts and/or creatures to their owner's hands.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 4 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.39

Tok: Bounce two of your opponent’s creatures and one of your own with an enter the battlefield effect then play yours. Or bounce three of your opponent’s creatures and play [mtg_card]Tamiyo, Field Researcher[/mtg_card] for free. I don’t think this will see constructed play since it’s a sorcery, but this is a limited bomb.

Hidsnake: Sorcery makes this really hard to play outside limited.

#30 - [mtg_card]Bastion Inventor[/mtg_card] - 5U

Creature - Vedalken Artificer - Common

Improvise

Hexproof

4/4

TCGPlayer MP: $0.13

Tok: I want to believe that improvise can make it to the broken mechanics list, cost reduction so often does. Bastion Inventor seems seriously overcosted, but so did hooting mandrels and [mtg_card]Gurmag Angler[/mtg_card]. With enough [mtg_card]Clue[/mtg_card]s, Bastion Inventor may join their ranks as Pauper all-stars. Standard and Modern have better options, but hexproof does make this 4/4 appealing.

Hidsnake: I didn’t think about Pauper with this. But you have a point. Affinity is a deck in Pauper… I think. My knowledge of Pauper pretty stops after “every just plays Storm,” so I’m not sure how this plays. But I could see it.

#31 - [mtg_card]Disallow[/mtg_card] - 1UU

Instant - Rare

Counter target spell, activated ability, or triggered ability.

TCGPlayer MP: $3.91

Hidsnake: Whoa. That’s a pretty buff [mtg_card]Cancel[/mtg_card] you got there. This is certainly a Standard staple, as all universal counter spells at 3CMC are, but I think being a 3CMC counter spell makes it tricky to play in Modern. It’s utility level would have to be on par with [mtg_card]Cryptic Command[/mtg_card] to see play, and I’m not sure if it has that.

Tok: Oh this is why they can print Felidar Guardian with Saheeli in standard... So that Mirror is gonna be fun to watch.

Hidsnake: I’m pretty sure you are suppose to counter the spell in that combo and not the trigger, which any counterspell could do. That said, those mirrors are going to be awful. But back to Disallow. I wouldn’t pay $4 for a superpowered cancel.

#38 - [mtg_card]Mechanized Production[/mtg_card] - 2UU

Enchantment - Aura - Mythic

Enchant artifact you control

At the beginning of your upkeep, create a token that's a copy of enchanted artifact. Then if you control eight or more artifacts with the same name as one another, you win the game.

TCGPlayer MP: $4.03

Tok: This works on tokens as well. If you already have 7+ [mtg_card]Clue[/mtg_card]s/[mtg_card]Servo[/mtg_card]s/[mtg_card]Thopter[/mtg_card]s and enchant one, you will win on your next upkeep. [mtg_card]Darksteel Citadel[/mtg_card] is a nightmare to remove and with this attached you ramp each turn. More often than not this gets removed, but it seems fun for commander.

Hidsnake: If mass Clues becomes a thing, I might lose my mind.

Tok: I was promised a deck named “Blues Clues” or “Get a Clue” and so far no one has delivered.

Hidsnake: Goddammit.

#39 - [mtg_card]Metallic Rebuke[/mtg_card] - 2U

Instant - Common

Improvise (Your artifacts can help cast this spell. Each artifact you tap after you're done activating mana abilities pays for 1.)

Counter target spell unless its controller pays 3.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.16

Tok: 0 artifacts = Worse [mtg_card]Mana Leak[/mtg_card], 1 Artifact = Mana Leak, 2 Artifacts = Better Mana Leak.

Hidsnake: Improvise is not affinity. It’s doesn’t come free (or in the case of delve practically free). You have to tap artifacts to do this. I’m not sure this gets play because you have to physically have artifacts that do nothing in play for this to be effective. I’d rather play more limited counterspells.

Tok: Aren’t accidental clues a thing? Tireless tracker still sees play I think…

#44 - [mtg_card]Shielded Aether Thief[/mtg_card] - 1U

Creature - Vedalken Rogue - Uncommon

Flash

Whenever Shielded Aether Thief blocks, you get E.

T, Pay EEE: Draw a card.

0/4

TCGPlayer MP: $0.22

Tok: Good blocker against aggro. Pretty much guaranteed to gain at least one energy. Provides value late game provided you have some spare energy lying around. Solid limited card that may see play in constructed.

Hidsnake: It’s a 0/4 do nothing since no one will attack into it to draw cards after you flash it in.

Tok: Durdler durdles? Preventing attacks seems like a benefit for decks that would play this card.

Hidsnake: But those decks would rather play [mtg_card]Thing in the Ice[/mtg_card]?

#48 - [mtg_card]Trophy Mage[/mtg_card] - 2U

Creature - Human Wizard - Uncommon

When Trophy Mage enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 3, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.21

Hidsnake: It finds stuff man. People will play it. If [mtg_card]Trinket Mage[/mtg_card] see play, this will see play. All the stuff this card can get is kinda absurd. Most notable grabs are swords, [mtg_card]Trinisphere[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Crucible of Worlds[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Ensnaring Bridge[/mtg_card].

Tok: Also gets [mtg_card]Sword of Fire and Ice[/mtg_card], [mtg_card]Sword of Feast and Famine[/mtg_card], Sword of etc. and etc. In Standard it can get [mtg_card]Chief of the Foundry[/mtg_card] which makes your [mtg_card]Sram’s Expertise[/mtg_card] turn interesting.

Hidsnake: I said it gets swords…

Tok: Hey, did you know this can grab swords?

Hidsnake: I’m going to stab you with that sword.

#49 - [mtg_card]Whir of Invention[/mtg_card] - XUUU

Instant - Rare

Improvise

Search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost X or less, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.66

Hidsnake: An obvious callback to [mtg_card]Chord of Calling[/mtg_card]. The main difference between the two is that convoke allow you to play down colored mana cost, where improvise does not. So you actually have to pay down the UUU. Makes the card much harder to play. But I suspect a few decks can easily get away with it. I would look for it in Thopter Sword decks in Modern, but probably not outside that. Even in Standard, it would need a good combo to be playable. That said, some cards were just not meant to be thrown onto the battlefield at instant speed and it’s hard to tell what those cards are until brewers go ham. All that said, at $1.50 each it might not be bad to take a spin on this.

#53 - [mtg_card]Battle at the Bridge[/mtg_card] - XB

Sorcery - Rare

Improvise (Your artifacts can help cast this spell. Each artifact you tap after you're done activating mana abilities pays for 1.)

Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn. You gain X life.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.43

Tok: While I think [mtg_card]Fatal Push[/mtg_card] is the better removal, I don’t think the lifegain should be discounted. In standard this may be a viable sideboard against aggro and burn.

Hidsnake: It’s a sorcery. And there is WAY better removal in Standard. Keep your limited quality out of my constructed.

#57 - Fatal Push - B

Instant - Uncommon

Destroy target creature if it has converted mana cost 2 or less.

Revolt -- Destroy that creature if it has converted mana cost 4 or less instead if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn.

TCGPlayer MP: $4.44

Hidsnake: Oh snap. This might be the single best removal spell ever. Like, we’re talking on par with [mtg_card]Path to Exile[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Swords to Plowshares[/mtg_card] here. This kills nearly every dangerous card in both Modern and Legacy, then kills EVEN MORE CARDS if you use a fetchland that turn. The deck that most benefits from this is Modern Jund, which struggles pretty had against fast starting Zoo decks. Expect to see a lot of this card for next...forever. I guess I would say, given the recent history of Magic cards, I’m shocked that this card is a 1CMC Instant and not either 2CMC or a Sorcery.

Tok: Glad this isn’t in a rare slot. Kills [mtg_card]Tarmogoyf[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Restoration Angel[/mtg_card] which are the two big creatures I can think of. [mtg_card]Linvala, Keeper of Silence[/mtg_card] is 4CMC as well. Not much in modern is above 4 cmc…

Hidsnake: (Editor’s note) How hard is it to spell out card names dammit? That way I can connect to the database and readers actually know what the hell you are talking about. It took me about 20 minutes to realize you were talking about Linvala, the Keeper of Silence and not [mtg_card]Linvala, the Preserver[/mtg_card], which made zero sense.

Hidsnake: Had to add more to this card. It’s selling for $5 each. Guys. Come on. An uncommon in a currently printed small set cannot hold that price. Each box you buy will have 3-4. I do think that one day this will be in the $5-$10 range, but this shouldn’t be more than $2 while in print.

Tok: I said the 4 CMC Linvala man, pretty obvious I meant Keeper of Silence and not Linvala, the Preserver who is 6 CMC. I’m even talking about Modern for all of that comment...

#61 - [mtg_card]Gifted Aetherborn[/mtg_card] - BB

Creature - Aetherborn Vampire - Uncommon

Deathtouch, Lifelink

2/3

TCGPlayer MP: $0.35

Tok: Needs flying.

#62 - [mtg_card]Glint-Sleeve Siphoner[/mtg_card] - 1B

Creature - Human Rogue - Rare

Menace

Whenever Glint-Sleeve Siphoner enter the battlefield or attacks, you get E.

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay EE. If you do, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.

2/1

TCGPlayer MP: $1.18

Hidsnake: Too slow on it’s own to be effective anywhere. Needs to have energy counter generation support to be Standard playable.

Tok: Welcome to the Order of Wannabe Bobs ([mtg_card]Dark Confidant[/mtg_card]).

#64 - [mtg_card]Herald of Anguish[/mtg_card] - 5BB

Creature - Demon - Mythic

Improvise

Flying

At the beginning of your end step, each opponent discards a card.

1B, Sacrifice an artifact: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.

5/5

TCGPlayer MP: $4.51

Hidsnake: Theoretically, I could see this this get windmill slammed into play on T4 in Standard. Too expensive for outside Standard. I think the most important part of this card is the forced discard on a stick every turn. You can pretty quickly beat out control decks when they can’t net positive in cards every turn. I would look for this to get some play, particularly in sideboards to choke out control decks.

Tok: Rare to see a demon that is all upside, I think it will be hard to get this out on turn 4 reliably, but when it happens it will be sweet.

#66 - [mtg_card]Midnight Entourage[/mtg_card] - 2BB

Creature - Aetherborn Rogue - Rare

Other Aetherborn you control get +1/+1.

Whenever Midnight Entourage or another Aetherborn you control dies, you draw a card and lose 1 life.

3/3

TCGPlayer MP: $0.43

Tok: Lord that replaces itself, and any other members of the aetherborn tribe. I don’t know if there are enough good aetherborn creatures to benefit from this card, but the effect sounds strong.

Hidsnake: I’m with you, I don’t know if the aetherborn tribe is strong enough to hold up. Would be more interesting if it was 1BB.

#71 - [mtg_card]Secret Salvage[/mtg_card] - 3BB

Sorcery - Rare

Exile target nonland card from your graveyard. Search your library for any number of cards with the same name as that card, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.49

Hidsnake: I don’t know what this does. But I’m sure it does something.

#73 - [mtg_card]Vengeful Rebel[/mtg_card] - 2B

Creature - Aetherborn Warrior - Uncommon

Revolt -- When Vengeful Rebel enters the battlefield, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, target creature an opponent controls gets -3/-3 until end of turn.

3/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.21

Hidsnake: Not a terrible limited removal on a stick. Could even see play in Standard.

Tok: That’s removal on a stick. Great in limited.

#74 - [mtg_card]Yahenni, Undying Partisan[/mtg_card] - 2B

Legendary Creature - Aetherborn Vampire - Rare

Haste

Whenever a creature an opponent control dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Yahenni, Undying Partisan.

Sacrifice another creature: Yahenni gains indestructible until end of turn.

2/2

$0.99

Hidsnake: I’d have [mtg_card]Falkenrath Aristocrat[/mtg_card] flashbacks if I thought this card was anywhere close to that power level. But it’s not. Lacks flying and doesn’t buff itself with sacrificed creatures. Relies on removal to do work to make him big and a supply of cheap creatures to keep him alive. Not feeling it.

Tok: No idea why it wasn’t Whenever a creature dies. Cool subtype though.

Hidsnake: /shrug

#75 - [mtg_card]Yahenni’s Expertise[/mtg_card] - 2BB

Sorcery - Rare

All creatures get -3/-3 until end of turn.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

TCGPlayer MP: $5.40

Hidsnake: Feels broken. Like really broken. Allows you on T4 to sweep the board AND rebuild a boardstate. A -3/-3 sweeper for 4CMC may not be strong enough to displace [mtg_card]Damnation[/mtg_card] in Modern, but could easily see play in the format.

Tok: Clears off the board and puts down a [mtg_card]Tarmogoyf[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]Dark Confidant[/mtg_card]? Seems good. Definitely standard playable, maybe even modern playable.

#85 - [mtg_card]Indomitable Creativity[/mtg_card] - XRRR

Sorcery - Mythic

Destroy X target artifacts and/or creatures. For each permanent destroyed this way, its controller reveals cards from the top of his or her library until an artifact or creature card is revealed and exiles that card. Those players put the exiled cards onto the battlefield, then shuffle their libraries.

TCGPlayer MP: $2.91

#86 - [mtg_card]Invigorated Rampage[/mtg_card] - 1R

Choose one --

  • Target creature gets +4/+0 and gains trample until end of turn.

  • Two target creatures each get +2/+0 and gain trample until end of turn.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.22

Tok: This seems like a nice combat trick that helps aggro push damage and trade up.

#87 - [mtg_card]Kari Zev, Skyship Raider[/mtg_card] - 1R

Legendary Creature - Human Pirate

First strike, menace

Whenever Kari Zev, Skyship Raider attacks, create a legendary 2/1 red Monkey creature token named Ragavan that’s tapped and attacking. Exile that token at end of combat.

1/3

TCGPlayer MP: $1.80

Hidsnake: Keyword soup. Has one power and first strike + menace. Also has [mtg_card]Geist of Saint Traft[/mtg_card] powers to summon monkeys? I’ll be first to admit, this is a very powerful card but being legendary makes it tricky to play and aggro decks. It forces an reverse-chump on the monkey (with no negative value to you) and gets in Kari Zev because she has Menace so they would need 3 blockers. I figure this is going to be popular in Standard, but outside Standard I’m not so sure. I’d need to test it to see if this is a Modern playable card.

Tok: Casual flavor explosion. Pirate, check. SKY Pirate, double check. SKY Pirate with a monkey companion, triple check, SKY Pirate with a monkey companion and keyword soup at the end of a joke that has outstayed it’s welcome? PENTA-CHECK. Needless to say viability aside this is an awesome card. If tiny leaders was still a thing I would be crafting a pirate deck right now. Good thing it’s not.

Hidsnake: I think this might hold around $1.50 just on casual play alone. And I think this will be a Standard staple. By the way, I’m amazed you brought up sky pirate reference without a callout to Skies of Arcadia.

#88 - [mtg_card]Kari Zev’s Expertise[/mtg_card] - 1RR

Sorcery - Rare

Gain control of target creature or Vehicle until end of turn. Untap it. It gains haste until end of turn.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your hand without paying it's mana cost.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.56

Tok: I would run this with cards that require me to sacrifice a creature. It’s not a great strategy, but it sure is satisfying. Also, edict effects that require both players sacrifice a creature.

#90 - [mtg_card]Lightning Runner[/mtg_card] - 3RR

Creature - Human Warrior - Mythic

Double strike, haste

Whenever Lightning Runner attacks, you get EE, then you may pay EEEEEEEE. If you do, untap all creatures you control, and after this phase, there is an additional combat phase.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $2.21

Hidsnake: Dies to [mtg_card]Shock[/mtg_card].

#91 - [mtg_card]Pia’s Revolution[/mtg_card] - 2R

Enchantment - Rare

Whenever a nontoken artifact is put into your graveyard from the battlefield, return that card to your hand unless target opponent has Pia’s Revolution deal 3 damage to him or her.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.56

Hidsnake: Effects like this tends to make dumb cards do ridiculous things for people. The best examples I can see in Standard are Puzzleknots and [mtg_card]Hedron Archive[/mtg_card].

Tok: I’m getting [mtg_card]Athreos, God of Passage[/mtg_card] flashbacks.

Hidsnake: Good comparison.

#98 - [mtg_card]Shock[/mtg_card] - R

Instant - Common

Shock deals 2 damage to target creature or player.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.17

Hidsnake: Straight, unrestricted damage to players and creatures? This feels so rare anymore.

Tok: Reviewing reprints? I guess the sentiment about how rare this is is worth it. RIP [mtg_card]Lightning Bolt[/mtg_card].

Hidsnake: It’s Shock. So worth it.

#104 - [mtg_card]Aetherwind Basker[/mtg_card] - 4GGG

Creature - Lizard - Mythic

Trample

Whenever Aetherwind Basker enters the battlefield or attacks, you get E (an energy counter) for each creature you control.

Pay E: Aetherwind Basker gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

7/7

TCGPlayer MP: $1.15

Tok: Can generate a ton of energy in some decks, that being said it’s a big green dude who comes down late and dies to [mtg_card]Doom Blade[/mtg_card].

Hidsnake: If there was a card this set to say “dies to Doom Blade,” it’s this. There are better beefcakes you can play in green like [mtg_card]Decimator of the Provinces[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]World Breaker[/mtg_card].

#105 - [mtg_card]Aid from the Cowl[/mtg_card] - 3GG

Enchantment - Rare

Revolt - At the beginning of your end step, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, you may reveal the top card of your library. If it is a permanent card, you may put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise place the card on the bottom of your library.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.66

Hidsnake: Someone will play this a random Commander porn.

Tok: Happens at your end step, you can ensure it happens at least once, Scry is a thing. May not see play outside of casual/Commander, but it will probably see some Standard play at FNM.

Hidsnake: Silly Tok. No one plays Standard at FNM.

Tok: But how will I test my sick new deck idea???

Hidsnake: Like everyone else. Solitaire or bust.

#107 - [mtg_card]Greenbelt Rampager[/mtg_card] - G

Creature - Elephant - Rare

When Greenbelt Rampager enters the battlefield, pay EE. If you can't, return Greenbelt Rampager to its owner's hand and you get E.

3/4

TCGPlayer MP: $2.34

Hidsnake: This does some weird stuff. For one, the pay EE is a trigger than can be [mtg_card]Stifle[/mtg_card] and such. Second, this actually does enter play. It will trigger ETBs and will leave play to trigger revolt. Third, the payment is NOT optional. If you can pay the energy counter cost for this card, you HAVE to pay for this card. Little awkward as I can’t recall a card like this not have “may” phrase. But I do think this card is very good in Standard. It also might do weird enough things to see play in Legacy and Modern.

Tok: Good catch that you have to pay EE if you can, I missed that. I thought you could perpetually bounce, though I may have been reading a translation the first time. Worse than I thought it was, but it’s still a 3/4 for G which is pretty good in my book.

#108 - [mtg_card]Greenwheel Liberator[/mtg_card] - 1G

Creature - Elf Warrior - Rare

Revolt - Greenwheel Liberator enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn.

2/1

TCGPlayer MP: $1.19

Hidsnake: A 2/1 for 2CMC is bland. A 4/3 for 2CMC is somewhere near [mtg_card]Tarmogoyf[/mtg_card]. My thought is that this isn’t actually that good. It’s OK when you have aggro decks running creatures into blockers. But paying 2CMC for a 2/1 is unplayable.

Tok: Do you take the tempo loss if you can’t trigger revolt, or do you play it turn 2 to maintain tempo? Do you purposefully attack poorly to trigger revolt just to get a 4/3 for 2? It may work in Modern Zoo where fetchlands can guarantee a 4/3 on turn 2.

Hidsnake: No way this gets play in Modern Zoo.

#109 - [mtg_card]Heroic Intervention[/mtg_card] - 1G

Instant - Rare

Permanents you control gain Hexproof and Indestructible until end of turn.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.64

Hidsnake: Sideboard special. I could see it in Modern with some of the Monogreen Devotion style decks to protect its aggression.

Tok: Counters combat tricks and spot removal while also being a combat trick. Sideboard hero for decks that like to go wide.

#110 - [mtg_card]Hidden Herbalists[/mtg_card] - 1G

Creature - Human Druid - Uncommon

Revolt - When Hidden Herbalists enters the battlefield, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, add GG to your mana pool.

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.46

Hidsnake: Easier to cast [mtg_card]Burning-Tree Emissary[/mtg_card] that doesn’t get as much value. I think since it can’t instantly go off like Burning-Tree Emissary makes it not very good. But I wanted to point out the comparable card.

Tok: Calling it now, secretly broken.

Hidsnake: That’s a bold strategy Cotton. Let’s see how it plays out.

#115 - [mtg_card]Maulfist Revolutionary[/mtg_card] - 1GG

Creature - Human Warrior - Uncommon

Trample

When Maulfist Revolutionary enters the battlefield or dies, for each kind of counter on target permanent or player, give that permanent or player another counter of that kind.

3/3

TCGPlayer MP: $0.23

Tok: A 3 mana 3/3 with trample is pretty good, the proliferate-ish effect is interesting when coupled with planeswalkers. Probably won’t see play outside standard. May not even see play in standard.

#116 - [mtg_card]Monstrous Onslaught[/mtg_card] - 3GG

Sorcery - Uncommon

Monstrous Onslaught deals X damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures, where X is the greatest power among creatures you control as you cast Monstrous Onslaught.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.29

Tok: You don’t often see this type of spell with an “as you cast” clause. Even if your highest power creature is removed in response to casting this spell it will still use it’s power. It’s a bit overcosted in my opinion, and it still requires a creature on the board as well. Not standard playable, probably good in limited.

#117 - [mtg_card]Narnam Renegade[/mtg_card] - G

Creature - Elf Warrior - Uncommon

Deathtouch

Revolt — Narnam Renegade enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it if a permanent you control left the battlefield this turn.

1/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.42

Tok: 2/3 for 1 with deathtouch seems OK. Even as a 1/2 for 1 with deathtouch this isn’t too bad. Great for limited.

Hidsnake: It would be really good in Standard if we didn’t already have [mtg_card]Gnarlwood Dryad[/mtg_card], which is probably better. Do agree with you, great in limited.

#122 - [mtg_card]Rishkar, Peema Renegade[/mtg_card] - 2G

Legendary Creature - Elf Druid - Rare

When Rishkar, Peema Renegade enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on each of up to two target creatures.

Each creature you control with a counter on it has "T: Add G to your mana pool."

2/2

TCGPlayer MP: $2.21

Tok: Since it’s “up to two target creatures” he can just target himself and become a 3/3 mana dork for 3, or he can target two other creatures. I wouldn’t write him off, but his power level is probably pretty low.

Hidsnake: Low power level I agree. I’m not even sure Commander fanatics can look at this and think of something dumb to do.

#123 - [mtg_card]Rishkar’s Expertise[/mtg_card] - 4GG

Sorcery - Rare

Draw cards equal to the greatest power among creatures you control.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 5 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.17

Hidsnake: I doubt this is Standard playable. But should be fairly popular in Commander to do Commander like things.

Tok: Worth noting the draw happens before the cast so you can draw into something better than what is in your hand, or take a gamble.

#126 - [mtg_card]Unbridled Growth[/mtg_card] - G

Enchantment - Aura - Common

Enchant Land

Enchanted land has "T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

Sacrifice Unbridled Growth: Draw a card.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.13

Tok: Fixes mana in the early game and draws a card when you no longer need the fixing.

#127 - [mtg_card]Ajani Unyielding[/mtg_card] - 4WG

Planeswalker - Ajani - Mythic

[+2]: Reveal the top three cards from your library. Put all nonland permanent cards revealed this way into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

[-2]: Exile target creature. Its controller gains life equal its power.

[-9]: Put five +1+1 counters on each creature you control and five loyalty counters on each other planeswalker you control.

4 Loyalty

TCGPlayer MP: $9.59

Hidsnake: This is a very Bant Control style planeswalker. He has a solid removal ability at the [-2] that get two uses. But the [+2] is great because it keeps netting cards. For a tapout style Bant Control list, that just fuels the train of value town Bant Control is made for. But Ajani’s problem is that he can’t be your engine to victory, he isn’t your hammer to victory the way [mtg_card]Elspeth, Sun's Champion[/mtg_card] was. I think at 6CMC he is a hard sell to play more than 2-of in a deck. I’m not even sure he is the best choice in most decks, particularly when we have [mtg_card]Smuggler's Copter[/mtg_card]s flying everywhere.

Hidsnake: Now that Copter is banned, this becomes a little bit better since he doesn't have to worry about Copter swinging in, and he can't remove it with his sorcery speed removal ability.

#128 - [mtg_card]Dark Intimations[/mtg_card] - 2UBR

Sorcery - Rare

Each opponent sacrifices a creature or planeswalker, then discards a card. You return a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand, the draw a card.

When you cast a Bolas planeswalker spell, exile Dark Imitations from your graveyard. That planeswalker enters the battlefield with an additional loyalty counter on it.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.37

Hidsnake: People will never understand just how brutal [mtg_card]Cruel Ultimatum[/mtg_card] really was. Resolving one was game ending. This is a more fair version of that. The main difference is that the old Cruel Ultimatum decks were running it just to resolve one and win the game. Oftentimes, it was a dead card because it was so hard to cast. Dark Intimation is not a dead card and is actually easy to cast. I suspect we will see quite a bit of this card in Standard. That said, at 5CMC, I don’t think this card gets enough value to be playable in Modern. Would have to hit [mtg_card]Cryptic Command[/mtg_card] levels of power to get Modern play, which I don't think it does.

Tok: Looks like we’re getting another Bolas in the future.

Hidsnake: Goes without saying that at under $1 each, is this probably a good buy.

#131 - [mtg_card]Oath of Ajani[/mtg_card] - WG

Legendary Enchantment - Rare

When Oath of Ajani enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.

Planeswalker spells you cast cost 1 less to cast.

TCGPlayer MP: $2.52

Hidsnake: So do I play it before or after my token generating planeswalker? The two abilities are good, but they don’t synergize really well. Often you are going to get on effect or the other. That said, this is a fine card. Token do not have anthems at the moment. This is probably the best they are going to get. Feels playable in a Standard for with token generating walkers in [mtg_card]Nissa, Voice of Zendikar[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Gideon, Ally of Zendikar[/mtg_card].

#133 -[mtg_card] Renegade Rallier[/mtg_card] - 1WG

Creature - Human Warrior - Uncommon

Revolt - When Renegade Rallier enters the battlefield, if a permanent you controlled left the battlefield this turn, return target permanent card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

3/2

TCGPlayer MP:$0.48

Hidsnake: Permanent? PERMANENT!? So I can get back my fetchland, hatebear, or [mtg_card]Ghost Quarter[/mtg_card]? Lol. This card does absurd stuff. I want to [mtg_card]Eldrazi Displacer[/mtg_card] this, which will trigger revolt.

Tok: This card is stupid good and I’m glad it’s at Uncommon. Probably will see play in Standard and Modern. It does so many things.

Hidsnake: I’m surprised they didn’t add the [mtg_card]Scion of Vitu-Ghazi[/mtg_card] qualifier where the card has to ETB from your hand.

#134 - [mtg_card]Renegade Wheelsmith[/mtg_card] - 1RW

Creature - Dwarf Pilot - Uncommon

Whenever Renegade Wheelsmith becomes tapped, target creature can't block this turn.

3/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.22

Tok: Synergises well with vehicles and can attack on his own effectively.

Hidsnake: I thought so too, but dunno if this is good enough for Standard. Certainly a quality limited card.

#135 - [mtg_card]Rogue Refiner[/mtg_card] - 1UG

Creature - Human Rogue - Uncommon

When Rogue Refiner enters the battlefield, draw a card and gain EE.

3/2

TCGPlayer MP: $0.26

Hidsnake: Literally does everything. Everything.

Tok: Yeah. Solid card.

#137 - [mtg_card]Tezzeret the Schemer[/mtg_card] - 2WB

Planeswalker - Tezzeret - Mythic

[+1]: Create a colorless artifact token named Etherium Cell with "T, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

[-2]: Target creature get +X/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of artifacts you control.

[-7]: You get an emblem with "At the beginning of combat on your turn, target artifact you control becomes an artifact creature with base power and toughness 5/5."

5 Loyalty

TCGPlayer MP: $11.78

Hidsnake: Cringeworthy. Trash. Is this the intro pack planeswalker? The [+1] is bad. The [-2] is garbage. Requires artifacts in play to defend itself? Even the ultimate is lame. This card is just bad.

Tok: I won’t say it’s bad, it has 5 loyalty and can go up to 6 the turn it’s played. Keeping 1 mana up to play a removal spell is not a great way to defend itself, but its OK. You definitely want [mtg_card]Fatal Push[/mtg_card] in your hand when you play Tezz. The emblem is easy to get and can get out of hand quick as long as you have a steady stream of artifacts. The [-2] can double as removal, but the dependence of artifacts most often times makes it weak. I think it’s better than Hidsnake thinks, but not a great planeswalker.

Hidsnake: TRASH.

#138 - [mtg_card]Tezzeret's Touch[/mtg_card] - 1BU

Enchantment - Aura - Rare

Enchant artifact

Enchanted artifact is a creature with base power and toughness 5/5 in addition to its other types.

When enchanted artifact is put into a graveyard, return that card to its owner's hand.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.47

Tok: [mtg_card]Ensoul Artifact[/mtg_card] that goes back to your hand. Harder to cast and is not [mtg_card]Rancor[/mtg_card].

#142 - [mtg_card]Aethersphere Harvester[/mtg_card] - 3

Artifact - Vehicle

Flying

When Aether Swooper enters the battlefield, you get EE.

Pay E: Aethersphere Harvester gains lifelink until end of turn.

Crew 1

3/5

TCGPlayer MP: $3.79

#146 - [mtg_card]Consulate Dreadnought[/mtg_card] - 1

Artifact - Vehicle - Uncommon

Crew 6 (Tap any number of creatures you control with total power 6 or more: This Vehicle becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.)

"It's like they planted another Bastion right in the middle of the harbor." —Bes Tavani, Bomat merchant

7/11

TCGPlayer MP: $0.40

Tok: [mtg_card]Siege Modification[/mtg_card] makes this a 10/11 on turn 3 I guess. Honestly 6 power on turn 3 is not that hard to get.

Hidsnake: Ya, but I’d probably just attack for 6 instead of playing this.

#152 - [mtg_card]Gonti’s Aether Heart[/mtg_card] - 6

Legendary Artifact - Mythic

Whenever Gonti's Aether Heart or another artifact enters the battlefield under your control, you get EE.

Pay EEEEEEEE, Exile Gonti's Aether Heart: Take an extra turn after this one.

TCGPlayer MP: $3.24

#153 - [mtg_card]Heart of Kiran[/mtg_card] - 2

Legendary Artifact - Vehicle - Mythic

Flying, vigilance

Crew 3

You may remove a loyalty counter from a planeswalker you control rather than pay Heart of Kiran's crew cost.

4/4

TCGPlayer MP: $17.23

Hidsnake: A decent card with a very limited scope. I think I found a use for [mtg_card]Dovin Baan[/mtg_card]. Make this thing hit people in the face. Playable in planeswalker heavy decks, but hard to fit anywhere else.

Tok: I’m missing how this plays well with Dovin…

Hidsnake: Because Dovin is crap and would be better off feeding this than using any of his crap abilities. HATEHATEHATEHATEHATE. Back on point here. Decks that can play this will get great value. Every other deck won’t. The card is probably worth they hype, but being Legendary makes it hard to play 4x in a deck. So I think $15+ is probably waaaaaay too much to spend on this.

#154 - [mtg_card]Hope of Ghirapur[/mtg_card] - 1

Legendary Artifact Creature - Thopter - Rare

Flying

Sacrifice Hope of Ghirapur: Until your next turn, target player who was dealt combat damage by Hope of Ghirapur this turn can't cast noncreature spells.

1/1

TCGPlayer MP: $2

Hidsnake: Watch this one. I think it would be pretty easy to use this to lock someone out of a game. Just have to figure out how. Reminds me of Yata-Garasu in Yu-Gi-Oh. Hit someone and they are just locked out of the game.

Tok: I’m not sure how to repeatedly bring this back from the graveyard to lock someone out. They can still play instants on your first main phase every turn and if you don’t sacrifice Hope of Ghirapur after it deals damage you can’t lock them out at all on their turn. I think I would rather have [mtg_card]Judge’s Familiar[/mtg_card].

#159 - [mtg_card]Implement of Malice[/mtg_card] - 2

Artifact - Common

B, Sacrifice Implement of Malice: Target player discards a card. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.

When Implement of Malice is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, draw a card.

TCGPlayer MP: $0.11

Tok: I like this cycle of useless artifacts. Do something AND draw a card is much less useless than normal.

#160 - [mtg_card]Inspiring Statuary[/mtg_card] - 3

Artifact - Rare

Nonartifact spells you cast have improvise.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.35

Tok: Someone will break it. It can be tapped as well to reduce costs. At worst it’s a colorless mana rock, at best it lets you cast [mtg_card]Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger[/mtg_card] for free.

Hidsnake: If you mass [mtg_card]Clue[/mtg_card] win-condition is a thing, I’ll ride the bandwagon with you on this. But I suspect you overvalue improvise. Commander special.

#162 - [mtg_card]Lifecrafter’s Bestiary[/mtg_card] - 3

Artifact - Rare

At the beginning of your upkeep, scry 1.

Whenever you cast a creature spell, you may pay G. If you do, draw a card.

TCGPlayer MP: $1.03

Hidsnake: I don’t think this has much constructed potential. But I suspect it will be a fun Commander toy.

Tok: Underestimating the scry each turn. I think it’s too expensive for aggro at 3 CMC, but this may be good for midrange decks.

Hidsnake: Ok, I bleached the existence of Monoblue Devotion and [mtg_card]Thassa, God of the Sea[/mtg_card] from my mind. I still don’t think it’s good enough for Standard, but could see it in some brews.

#164 - [mtg_card]Metallic Mimic[/mtg_card] - 2

Artifact Creature - Shapeshifter - Rare

As Metallic Mimic enters the battlefield, choose a creature type.

Metallic Mimic is the chosen type in addition to its other types.

Each other creature you control of the chosen type enters the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it.

2/1

TCGPlayer MP: $3.47.

Hidsnake: Oh look, it’s a new [mtg_card]Adaptive Automaton[/mtg_card]. Might be Standard playable.

Tok: People love tribal. Spirits, vampires, and eldrazi oh my.

#169 - [mtg_card]Paradox Engine[/mtg_card] - 5

Legendary Artifact - Mythic

Whenever you cast a spell, untap all nonland permanents you control.

TCGPlayer MP: $7.56

Hidsnake: WHY? This thing is broken. It’s a colorless [mtg_card]Jeskai Ascendancy[/mtg_card]. Broken. Commander fangasm.

Tok: Play some dorks, play Paradox Engine, play some cantrips, ???, Profit? Not as broken as Jeskai Ascendency, but in the same ballpark.

Hidsnake: It being colorless probably makes it just as if not more broken.

#171 - [mtg_card]Planar Bridge[/mtg_card] - 6

Legendary Artifact - Mythic

8, T: Search your library for a permanent card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.

TCGPlayer MP: $4.48

#175 - [mtg_card]Scrap Trawler[/mtg_card] - 3

Artifact Creature - Construct - Rare

Whenever Scrap Trawler or another artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return to your hand target artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost.

3/2

TCGPlayer MP: $1.47

Hidsnake: This is another one to keep an eye on. Particularly since the ability stacks (If you have 2 in play). It seems like a good way to keep annoying threats around like [mtg_card]Hope of Ghirapur[/mtg_card] when you can sacrifice some random 2CMC artifact. Also, itself is affected by it’s own effect so it does get some value even if it’s instantly killed on sight.

Tok: Oh artifact soulshift… Cool.

Hidsnake: I feel like I need to name a card with soulshift, like [mtg_card]Thief of Hope[/mtg_card], just so people know what soulshift even was.

#177 - [mtg_card]Treasure Keeper[/mtg_card] - 4

Artifact Creature - Construct - Uncommon

When Treasure Keeper dies, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a nonland card with converted mana cost 3 or less. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Put all cards not cast this way on the bottom of your library in a random order.

3/3

TCGPlayer MP: $0.52

Tok: Gets some extra value I guess.

Hidsnake: SPIN THE WHEEL.

#181 - [mtg_card]Walking Ballista[/mtg_card] - XX

Artifact Creature - Construct - Rare

Walking Ballista enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.

4: Put a +1/+1 counter on Walking Ballista.

Remove a +1/+1 counter on Walking Ballista: It deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

0/0

TCGPlayer MP: $2.43

#184 - [mtg_card]Spire of Industry[/mtg_card]

Land - Rare

T: Add [C] to your mana pool.

T, Pay 1 life: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Activate this ability only if you control an artifact.

TCGPlayer MP: $3.94

Hidsnake - [mtg_card]Glimmervoid[/mtg_card]? The advantage is that this produces colorless. And doesn’t blowup when you get [mtg_card]Shatterstorm[/mtg_card]’d. Disadvantage is that you end of taking more damage to it. I don’t know if this fits into the very compact manabase for Affinity in Modern, but I bet someone tries. My instinct is to say no, it doesn’t.
